Glyndŵr’s Way – Explore Mid Wales on Foot

Having a holiday home at Cwm Hafren means having some of Wales’ most beautiful scenery on your doorstep. One of the best ways to experience it is by walking Glyndŵr’s Way – a long-distance National Trail that celebrates the landscape and history of Mid Wales. Whether you like a gentle stroll or a full day’s hike, there’s something for everyone.

A Trail with a Story

Named after Owain Glyndŵr, the last Welshman to hold the title Prince of Wales, the trail honours his legacy. In the early 1400s he led a famous uprising and today Glyndŵr’s Way follows a 135 mile (217km) loop through rolling countryside and historic towns, including Knighton, Machynlleth and Welshpool.

Stunning Scenery and Wildlife

The joy of Glyndŵr’s Way is its variety. You’ll walk through farmland and forest, climb onto wild moorland with breathtaking views and follow peaceful riverside paths. From the top of Foel Fadian you can see across the Dyfi Valley to the Cambrian Mountains – and even as far as Cardigan Bay on a clear day.

Wildlife enthusiasts won’t be disappointed. Red kites, buzzards and even ospreys are known to frequent the area making it a great spot for birdwatching. The peace and quiet here is perfect for slowing down and enjoying nature at its best.

Walking Through History

The landscape tells its own story, too. In Machynlleth you can walk in the footsteps of Glyndŵr himself who held his first parliament there in 1404. Along the way you’ll also come across Roman roads, medieval abbeys and old mining settlements, all adding to the history of your walk.

Walks for Every Pace

Holidaying so close to Glyndŵr’s Way means you don’t have to do the whole trail to enjoy it. Around Llanidloes you can find the Hafren Forest and Clywedog Reservoir, near Machynlleth you’ll find rugged moorland and big open views and closer to Welshpool the gentler routes are perfect for family days out. Wherever you go the trail is well waymarked so you can explore.

For holiday home owners at Cwm Hafren, Glyndŵr’s Way is more than a walk – it’s part of what makes Mid Wales so special. From Cwm Hafren, start at Hafren Forest Visitor Centre near Llanidloes and follow the Blaen Hafren Falls Trail up to Plynlimon, where you join Glyndŵr’s Way.
