To many, Newtown is a familiar landmark on a map, a pleasant place to drive through on the way to the coast or deeper into the mountains. But if you only see it through a windscreen, you’re missing the best parts. For a local, Newtown is a town with a surprisingly creative soul, brimming with hidden galleries, artisan spirit, and quiet corners that feel a world away from the main road.
As the valley wakes up this spring, there is no better time to slow down and discover the authentic charm of our local streets and riverside paths. Whether you are hunting for contemporary art or the perfect flat white, the town’s independent spark is everywhere you look.
When you buy a holiday home at Cwm Hafren, it becomes your home away from home for every season. Spring is the perfect time to enjoy the countryside like a local, when the fields are blooming, the sun is peeking through, and the best spots aren’t taken over by the summer buzz yet!
Your holiday home will be a base for all of your spring adventures, whether you’re a bird watcher, dog walker, cafe connoisseur, or local history buff. As a Newtown local and part of the Cwm Hafren community, you can visit the hidden gems whenever you want.
As our neighbouring town, we’ve figured out the perfect way to spend a spring day in Newtown, like a local.

If a day exploring the town isn’t your cup of tea, Cwm Hafren serves as the perfect nature spot to take in the best of Mid Wales’s countryside. No crowds, no noise, just the sound of the wind in the trees and the red kites circling overhead.
The hills overlooking the park offer various trails that provide sweeping views of the Montgomeryshire countryside. Many locals enjoy the town loop walks that take you through parts of Newtown Park, for an afternoon dog walk through the lush greenery or a quiet spot to read your book.
Only a 10-minute drive from your base, Pwll Penarth Nature Reserve is located just on the edge of Newtown. It’s a fantastic spot for birdwatching, with hides available to view kingfishers and otters if you’re lucky! Another nature reserve, Dolforwyn Woods, offers steep paths and beautiful wildflowers in the spring, with the bonus of Dolforwyn Castle nearby.
For those willing to drive further, Montgomery Canal, Hafren Forest (where the River Severn starts) and the Brecon Beacons are stunning locations for a day trip in the countryside, really making the most of the surrounding scenery. Although it’s not as local as some of our parks and woodlands next door, Cwm Hafren is still a brilliant base for a day of spring adventures.
An incredible day trip, only about an hour away, for a glimpse of the sea is Aberdyfi (Aberdovey). In spring, when the sun is starting to appear, the first trip to the seaside without the crowds of summer is the epitome of relaxation.
You can’t see everything in a bank holiday weekend. The best way to experience Newtown and the surrounding hills is to make it your home away from home, for every season.
