Montgomery Castle was built in the 1200s by Henry III, replacing an earlier wooden fortification known as Hen Domen. Its location was no accident – high on a crag, it commanded views across the Severn Valley and towards the English border.
It was attacked many times and besieged by Welsh princes, fortified during the English Civil War and eventually demolished in 1649 to prevent it from being used again. Today, the remains of the curtain walls, towers, and gatehouse still stand, offering a glimpse into the turbulent history of the Welsh Marches.
If you like history, it’s a must-see. But even if the medieval past isn’t your thing, it’s worth a visit.
The walk up to Montgomery Castle is short but sweet. From the top, you’re rewarded with views of the surrounding countryside with hills, patchwork fields and the winding River Severn. On a clear day, you can see for miles in every direction, making it a perfect spot for photos or just to pause and take in the view.
